Born in London in 1953, David Chipperfield graduated with a Diploma in architecture from the Architectural Association in 1977.
After graduating he worked for Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster. David Chipperfield Architects was founded in 1984; it now has more than 150 employees in London, Berlin and Milan and its Shanghai branch. The studio has won more than 40 national and international competitions and several international awards and honourable mentions in design, including the RIBA, RFAC & AIA awards and the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007.
In 2004 he was named Honorary Member of the Academy of Arts and Design in Florence and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his outstanding achievements in architectural design. Important recent projects include: the Anchorage Museum in the Rasmuson Center in Anchorage, Alaska (USA), the new City of Justice and the Audiovisual Campus offices in Barcelona, the little Kivik Art Centre pavilion in Sweden and the large Ninetree Village residential district in Hangzhou, China.
