Our latest commission involved a chainsaw, a quad bike and a café… the fit-out of the Newtown Social Club on Brunswick street in Fitzroy will involve the transformation of the existing space into a giant pile of logs… stage 1 of the works has been completed, with a reworking of the existing counter and internal layout to improve the circulation and public interface. In additional we have developed a prototype of the log panelling system to allow the internal wall to be clad in wheels of mountain ash, cut by hand from Juliet’s property in Kinglake. The space is set to be transformed over the coming weeks as the cladding is installed and the personalities of new owners Jake and Andrew, are reflected in the tactile and organic fitout which will provide a new and refreshing café space on one of Melbourne’s iconic shopping strips…

Our latest commission, to design an exhibition space paying homage to 10 generations of Ketel One vodka distilling, and the craftsmanship involved. The Ketel One Commission invites 16 talented modern craftsmen to share their creative process in an upcoming exhibition to be held at the compound interest in Melbourne. The project provides a platform to encouraging the creative's to express their views on the importance of craftsmanship in the modern world. Those invited to participate straddle myriad disciplines, including illustration, photography, furniture making, web design and more.We are developing a concept that involves a series of interconnecting layers representing the personality and process involved in the creation of each exhibits. Engaging the audience with the memory of the process involved in developing the exhibit and the character of each individual to explain and represent the notion of craftsmanship. The works will be exhibited on a horizontal surface which references the idea of the traditional work bench, with light filtering through images and text mounted above the viewer ,casting a shadow/memory on the works below, with the tools and equipment used in the creation of the 'exhibit' collected on the surface below. The exhibition opens at the Compound Interest in Melbourne next month.

Last year we took a trip to Tokyo. We left with an amazing sense of what the future could hold. A society that operates so smoothly, where process is inherent in activity, where buildings freely express the eclectic and fascinating nature of what it means to be a contemporary city, whilst holding true to its heritage, culture and belief in itself. A country populated with some of the most polite and embracing characters we have had the pleasure to meet. Our hearts go out to everyone in Japan, and hope that their strength as a nation can see them through this devastating time and that their example continues to be a source of inspiration to the rest of the world.

some photos from a recent project we did with arsndorf for their temporary concept store / a cave-like space which popped up on Moor Street in Fitzroy, Melbourne for just three days to provide an intimate setting for Arnsdorf’s Opticks Collection, with soft hues and nude tones to complement the colours of the Opticks range. The fitout is inspired by crystalline forms, Superman’s fortress of solitude and images of rocky landscapes // also an extra special thankyou to our collaborators/ rockstars without which none of this would be possible - richard, edwina, anthony, steph & lisa !

Recently we have been working on a new house for a sloping site with spectacular 180 degree views eastwards across the Yarra Valley.

The house is split into two halves to create a private internal courtyard which provides access through the entirity of the house - front to back. The two halves of the house can also be opened onto the courtyard to create semi- external spaces. The narrow plan forms of the two halves together with the courtyard allow for natural cooling through cross ventilation and act to draw air through the house.

We are excited to watch the hillside habitat take shape in the mountains outside Melbourne. With a completion date set for the end of the year the building has fully emerged from the landscape.

The roof and external walls are in place with the glazing being installed as we speak.
With all the rain of recent weeks new growth is abundant and the dam is full....More to follow in the weeks to come
