With each pendant, illustration or logo, Elke Kramer offers a little piece of her larger creative vision. Wistful, whimsical, nostalgic and gratuitously decorative, an Elke-eye-view transforms the world into a kaleidoscopic melange of deco geometry, fin de siècle wallpaper patterning, mixed with rococo foppery and decadence, crazed marine invertebrates and Victorian sideshow aesthetics.
Defiant of disciplinary boundaries, Kramer cultivates her practice across a variety of media, including illustration, merchandising, multimedia and textile design. It is her range of accessories, however, that provides the cornerstone to her work. She launched her label in 2004 with her second collection of bizarre, intricately layered wooden elements, The Anti-Curse of Greyface, propelling her to an international audience, including being picked up by all Barneys CO-OP stores. The collection has now grown to incorporate bags, purses, silk scarves, and belts as well as jewellery.
Kramer has also undertaken recent key projects, including art directing the Russh magazine (Australia) website, creating a custom runway jewellery collection for Jessie Hill's S/S 07/08 parade, illustrations for Garcia Marquez Gauche, and collaborations with Mala Brajkovic.
