JAMESPLUMB

Two artists under one name JAMESPLUMB work with the overlooked and discarded, taking time worn antiques and cast-offs to produce one-off assemblages, luminaires, and interiors.

JAMESPLUMB is Hannah Plumb and James Russell, a couple who met in 1998 at Wimbledon School of Art.   Both studying Fine Art Sculpture Hannah worked with ideas of the uncanny, ideals of beauty, and animism - the human ability to project life onto inanimate objects.  James used light as his medium exploring beauty and the sublime in the commonplace.

In recent years they have begun to work together and today their combined name of JAMESPLUMB represents the single artistic voice that builds on their different but complementary approaches. With Hannah's desire to find life and potential in the forgotten, and James' interest in exposing hidden beauty in the everyday, they juxtapose practical function with their sculptural vision.

The pair relish responding to interiors and creating unique commissions - bringing an eye for the unusual and a passion for the timeless. Their interiors have traces of history, but with new stories to tell.

More than just a reworking of found objects, JAMESPLUMB's approach to their assemblage is respectful and careful, preserving the character and authenticity of the subject whilst creating something entirely new.  The handmade ethos means that each object's concerns are responded to individually, eschewing a formulaic production line approach.

Objects take on life and are given names that reflect their history and character - often inspired by the names in the couple's expanding collection of old letters and correspondence.

JAMESPLUMB's luminaires take the same start point as their assemblages but become multiples or editions.

The beauty and history of the commonplace but forgotten have a restored confidence and identity under the hand of JAMESPLUMB, revealing and celebrating the stories real or imagined that might have gone untold - monuments to the anonymous.

"Objects are waiting for love - for someone to say 'I want you'."

Wilfred

Wilfred our dog never fails to keep us amused, and going for walks is invaluable for clearing the head if you have cabin fever in the studio…
