Lina Ekstrand

Lina Ekstrand

Lina Ekstrand is a Swedish based illustrator, working in different techniques mixing traditional pencil drawings with explosive details in ink and watercolour. Growing up in the countryside she was left to her own imagination and was given the chance to indulge her fantasies by playing with animals, building treehouses, dressing up whenever she wanted and exploring the wonders of nature. Still, the magic of nature and the universe are her biggest sources of inspiration, and she often has an imaginative approach to her naturalistic drawings. Currently she is working in Sweden after a few years living abroad in Mexico, New York, London and Berlin, but the plan is to move out into the countryside and start a vineyard, build a studio for creative meetings and workshops and getting into building fun stuff! Her biggest dream would be to work with scenography or puppet theatre, and to translate those imaginary worlds into real life!

A new personal project that I´ve made together with fantastic journalist and beauty editor at BON magazine Maria Ahlgren and photographer Jens Nordström. Maria describes the inspiration for the project perfectly:“Inspired by the impossible love, longing, Marchesa Luisa Casati, the twenties, Zelda Fitzgerald, Hemingway’s mistresses, whiskey, restlessness, jazz, ink, tears, exoticism, the East, Dali, folly, dandyism, loneliness, and the unhesitating relationship between madness and generous use of lipstick.” www.jensnordstom.com Looks a bi weird written like this, but here you can read more about Maria: http://bon.se/#/go=article;link=%2Fbloggers%2F%3Faut%3D6%3B

The last few months, my interest for the space, astronomy and how to read the stars has gone up a level or two! Therefore, I wasn´t that suprised when I got this job for Swedish magazine Damernas Värld, to do their big yearly horoscope illustration! The universe has its own ways of working things out. Here are the final result, and some of my research images! (Finally, detail from the illustration that wasnt published).

Ok, so here it comes!! As I figured, the Tarot garden was the most wonderful place I have ever been to!! Oh, it was so fantastic, everyone visiting Rome should definitely take a trip there, two hours from the city with the train, (and a looong walk, better take a taxi from the station or drive by car) this is the perfect one day get-away from the hectic tourism of Rome. While you´re there, do as we did and spend the night at an agriturismo ( we stayed at lovely Il Fontino, comes with puppies, open fire and all), have your lunch at the wonderful restaurant Il Tortello and have their homemade ravioli and half a liter of the local red wine with it an you have the perfect trip!

In a week I´m going to Italy- the best place in the world. And not just Italy, but the nicest place ever- the Tarot garden!!! I saw a documentary about Niki de Saint Phalle a few years ago and just fell in love with her, her work seemed to be all about play and fun. Alot of her work also reminds me of Yves saint Laurents drawings, and of course I love YSL. In Tuscany she has built an entire park made out of fantastic mosaic statues based on the tarot cards- the Tarot garden. Here are some photos to be inspired by for now, and I´ll upload some more from the actual trip later on! You can also watch the fantastic documentary about her life and work and relationship with artist Jean Tinguely by director Peter Schamoni. So excited!!!

Just found the nicest paper sculptures made by artists Allen and Patty Eckman! I have loved Native Americans since I was a kid, I used to have calendars with indians, howling wolves and Harley Davidsons, and I love everything made out of paper, so this suits me perfect! You can read more about the Eckmans on their website: www.eckmanfineart.com.

MYKITA is the nicest eyewear company! They have the whole production in one house, from graphic design to the little factory where the handmade glasses are produced. Stepping in to it feels a bit like stepping into a little magic world. Therefore, when I was asked to do a portrait of Paul, the office dog, as my contribution to their new coffee table book, it turned out like this! Oh, what a wonderful project! First, invite to the launch party, coverage of Mykita in Vogue Japan, my illustration and the shop at Murkudis!
