Of Chinese-American descent, Michael C. Hsiung is known for his black-and-white ink drawings depicting scenarios from the humorously mundane to fantastically strange. His art features imaginary characters and fantastical creatures, such as centaurs and mermen, who inhabit a landscape of ruined castles, dead animals, and withered trees. Protagonists include mermen in precarious and questionable situations, Victorian athletes and fancy men with dead prey, or imaginary and real animals struggling with their environment.Michael C. Hsiung currently lives in Los Angeles, CA where he continues to draw, show his work, sell prints, collect records and books, contribute art blogs, and think about playing Dungeons & Dragons.
He has done illustrations and artwork for the following: Dr. Martens, Dwindle / Enjoi Skateboards, Momentum Wheels, Matix Clothing, Ambiguous Clothing, Arbor Collective, Oxford American Magazine, Ling Ling Magazine (Spain), Count Your Lucky Stars, and most recently an Artists Map of Los Angeles for the Steve Turner Gallery. He has shown with various galleries, including East of Eden at Barnsdall Park, 2008 Helsinki Biennial, Giant Robot, Black Maria Gallery, and most recently had his first solo show, Human Failure, at the Slingluff in Philadelphia in 2011. He was also featured in Against the Grain's Featured Artist on www.hurley.com and works as Content Editor for the Vans art tumblr. He also contributes to various blogs including Daily Dujour, Club Mumble, The Pinecone Gentleman, and Fecalface.
